My first visit at Hentschel Hamburg, and not my last for sure.

My first visit at Hentschel Hamburg, and not my last for sure.

Two weeks ago, I happened to visit friends in Hamburg, Germany  They took me to Andreas Hentschel, founder and owner of Hentschel Hamburg, a hanseatic watchmanufacture located in the center of Hamburg.

It was a trip into a world that is not only connected to horology, but that is bridging timekeeping and seafarers and astronomy.  In his shop you can find old chronometers as ships used them centuries ago.

The watches made by Hentschel are classic and timeless.  Movements look nicely finished and are mostly inhouse developed manufacture calibers now.

Some movements, depending on the modelline, are chronometer movements.

What distinguishes Hentschel most from other watchmanufacturers is Andreas Hentschel himself and his personal note, his personal engagement and effort to advise you in every step of the watch that suits you best.  He is there for you.  A great guy to talk to.  Highly knowledgable, very approachable and kind and warmhearted, patient and supportive.  He wants every customer to walk out with the feeling that he acquired a timpiece for life, a watch that will accompany you for ever.  Therefore, he offers free revisions, a 63 months warranty and a free annual spring checkup of your Hentschel timepiece.

In fact, you get a personalized and bespoke timepiece from Andreas.  A watch that suits your type and character and Andreas will make sure that he does it right.

Andreas Hentschel researched Bronze from ship’s propellers for over 10 years to develop a casematerial in bronze that doesn’t discolor or change its coloring.  He finally succeeded.  Now you can have Hentschel timepiece made of bronze ship’s propellers which have a very fine look and the material feels really very nice on the wrist.  A true accomplishment, and Andreas is the only one who can do this currently.  Obviously, being in Hamburg has helped him and gave me early exposure to ships in the large harbor.

Below you see a model with the bronze case and sector dial.  A lovely piece.  Forgive my photography, it was already dark outside and the lights inside of the shop were all but easy to take photos.

A more sporty look on this watch below, Andreas is covering sporty and classy looks with his cases which come in 2 different shapes in general and he distinguishes it with his modellines of H1 and H2.  There are more modellines aside from them though.

I spent hours talking with Andreas and it was lot of fun.  I am sure, this was not my last visit.  Nor was this my last blogpost about him and his timepieces.
