Not vintage, but great: the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscape chronograph

It is fun to see certain watches in the wild.  You get a sense of what the watch truly feels like and how people like it.

Blancpain has this watch with a blue dial for the Ocean Committment, but the meteor grey dial is not a limited version.  The dial is a sunburst dial and looks stunning, especially when the sun shines on it.

Forgive me if the pictures are not totally clear, I shot them while riding in a train and the train was shaking quite a bit.

The Fifty Fathoms Bathyscape has a chronograph with a flyback function.

This chronograph feels very high quality, the bracelet is amazing.  The watch is quite large sporting a 43mm case with 14.8mm height.  The lug width is 23mm.  It is a heavy watch, but it does not wear like it is “head heavy”.  For those who prefer a strap or Nato, Blancpain is offering that as an alternative.

The automatic movement reference F385 consists of 322 components and is offering 50 hours powerreserve.  More than enough for an automatic winding timepiece.

The movement carries a silicon balance spring making it resistant to magnetism.

The bezel is unidirectional.  The satin-brushed steel bezel has a ceramic insert and Liquidmetal® hour-markers. So it should glow quite a bit in the dark.

The Blancpain logo in the crown is large and covers the whole crown.

You may recall the advertisments of Blancpain claiming that they never built Quartz watches and never will and that they make watches since 1735.  They truly do, and overall there was “only” a 6 year break from 1976 to 1982.  Considering how old this company is, I think it is unfair to say that the company did not operate continuously when it only stopped production for 6 years in nearly three centuries since its foundation.

This is a chronograph for those who look for an exceptional timepiece.  Alternatively, this would also be a wonderful watch for someone who already calls all the other famous chronographs his own, such as the Daytona and Speedmaster.  The Fifty Fathoms started its history in 1953 and this is the continuation of a great legacy as the Fifty Fathoms is a great tool used even by military around the world including the German Bundeswehr.
