The “leap day”: February 29th

Today is a day that only occurs every four years.  People born on the 29th of February have a problem.  Well, I am sure, there is a solution, so probably in their passports, they write March 1st…?

For watchmaking, this day poses a special challenge.  There are timepieces called annual calendars which need to be set today to adjust for the 29th.  However, perpetual calendar watches have a mechanism that adjusts automatically for today.

There are many beautiful wristwatches that work as perpetual calendars.  The most famous brand of all is most likely Patek Philippe.  Their perpetual calendar timepieces have reached record prices at auctions in the past.  There are some stunning pieces, among them reference 2499 and 1518 which are highly appreciated and cherished by collectors.

Well, don’t forget to adjust your date, otherwise, tomorrow your watch will display the 30th.
