How to distinguish a fake Universal Geneve “Space Compax” from a real one?

How to distinguish a fake Universal Geneve “Space Compax” from a real one?

Fakes are flooding the markets around the globe.  It is a very lucrative business to sell fake watches for the price of real ones, even if just for a 100 bucks less.  Imagine what a dream the profit margins are?!

I would like to show you here how to distinguish one watch that has been faked a lot in the 1990s and those fakes are all over Ebay, Chrono24, and other sales sites on the internet.  For the common eye, you probably will not recognize what is wrong with it, so this will be a guide.

Friend of the show, collector and friend of mine, Balthasar, provided the information how to distinguish wrong from right.  So I am very happy that he is lending a helping hand, because this seems easy, but is not.

So lets go right into “medias res”, right into the heart of it.

First, there are no angles on the lugs of the original case!  The original case has kind of wide fases on the lugs.  Take a look at the pictures below for illustration.

Fake case, look at the lugs and the angle, no fase

authentic case, look at the fase on the lugs, a wide fase before it comes to an angle

Now let us compare the dial:

When you know these two details you will be able to recognize any fake Space Compax by Universal Geneve.

According to Balthasar,  most of these fakes were produced in the 90’s in Germany! Most of them are very easy to notice, with a diver engraved on the caseback, which is certainly not the case on the real ones (with only the serial number + ref. engraved -> two lines).

I hope this was an interesting learning lesson.  For further reading, continue over here.
