Urban Jürgensen reference 2240: one of the nicest surprises at Baselworld

Urban Jürgensen is blooming under new leadership.  They are connecting to their old history dating back to 1778 when the company was founded.

When you look at their watches you see a classic and timeless elegance. Teardrop lugs and handmade guilloche dials.  And for Baselworld 2016, Urban Jürgensen decided to introduce two new timepieces, with a newly styled case.

The two new models are reference 2240 and 2340.  I will talk about reference 2240 in this blogpost and write another one about the other reference.

The reference 2240 has tapered lugs in a classic design on a convex and concave curved rosegold case with a diameter of 40 mm.

The hands on each Urban Jürgensen watch consist of three parts and are completely handmade, taking between 6 to 8 hours time of a highly skilled watchmaker.

The dial is a Grenage dial and is finished with hand lacquered engraved Urban Jürgensen Arabic numerals. The process consists of several steps, first the numerals are engraved, then they are filled with laquer, after that the dial is polished plain and then the grenage process is done to give the dial this kind of silver grain look.

While the front crystal is domed, the caseback has a flat sapphire crystal.  The finishing of the movement is done by hand just as the dial.  While the front crystal is domed, the caseback has a flat sapphire crystal.  The finishing of the movement is done by hand just as the dial.  The movement is based on Urban Jürgensen‘s in-house P4 lever escapement movement.

Walking around Baselworld feels like a kid in a toystore.  You see so many watches from about 2000 watchmanufacturers from all over the world.  Obviously, this is not only the biggest watchfair in the world, but also the biggest convention of watchmakers who show their watches which you cannot see at your local authorized dealer.  Many even make less than 10 watches a year.  It is fascinating to see all this.  And Urban Jürgensen is a name that once was very famous as he operated at the same time as Louis Abraham Breguet and John Arnold who are both extremely important in watchmaking.  Breguet is recognized for Swiss watchmaking while Arnold was famous for British watchmaking.  Back in the time, the British has a strong foot in watchmaking.

Urban Jürgensen is looking good and based on their experience in maritime watches and observatory watches which led to the making of the detent escapement, I expect to see more interesting timepieces to come.

While I missed to take a wristshot, I guess I was just too excited about the beauty of this timepiece, I had it around my wrist and found it very comfortable and pleasant to wear as well as to look at its classic and elegant and timeless design.  This is a timepiece for a connaisseur.  Not something you can show off with tons of bling bling.  The bling is inside, not outside.
