After Baselworld: Laurent Ferrier’s first open Tourbillon

After Baselworld: Laurent Ferrier’s first open Tourbillon

Laurent Ferrier is not only a great watchmaker but a great and highly interesting person to speak to.  He used to drive Porsche races in Le Mans for Porsche Kremer, a wellknown Porsche Dealership in Cologne, Germany.  Laurent is a calm and curious talking partner and you do not feel how fast time flies when you speak with him.

In 2010 he decided to leave Patek Philippe and start his own brand. The watches he is making are clearly very classically inspired, maybe in part even vintage inspired.  They have clean faces and stunningly adorned and hand finished movements, an art you see less and less.  In my book, his movements belong to the nicest movements currently made in Switzerland.  His watch all carry his own inhouse developed calibers.  To date, he has never shown a tourbillon in front, but that changed for this Baselworld 2017 fair.

For the first time, he made a Tourbillon that shows openly on the dial side.

The new Tourbillon is housed in the same 41mm case, this time in whitegold.  The case is 12.7mm thick.

The movement is the LF 619.01 with 80 hours power reserve.

The movement is beating at 21600 vibrations per hour.  Next time I see the watch again, I will try to shoot a video of it.  If I manage to be in a quiet room, I may be able to show the slow beat.

The dial carries a circular satin-brushed chapter ring with silver-toned vertical satin-brushed finish in the center.  A very timeless and partially vintage inspired look.  And that is what Laurent Ferrier’s watches are about: timelessness, classy looks.  Nothing that screams “look at me”, I am the master of “bling”.  This is the kind of watch you wear silently and enjoy as only you know what you have on your wrist.  At the end of this blogpost, I am sharing a whole gallery of pictures with you which I shot during Baselworld.

Finally, what makes the most important part of a watch is how it feels on the wrist.  I usually like to wear a watch that does not feel like I am wearing a watch.  Not too heavy, no crown that pressures my skin.  I like to feel the winding of the crown to be smooth and feeling good.  And Laurent managed to give the winding of the crown the feeling like you are wearing an old watch.  I love that especially.  This is a watch for a true watchlover and connaisseur.  If you want to get a special piece, look at Laurent Ferrier‘s timepieces.  They are finely finished by hand and feel like you can wear them a life long with great pleasure.
