True vintage: Movado Super Sub Sea Chronograph with H146 movement

Movado Super sub Sea H146

Most people tend to think of Rolex when they think of vintage watches. One reason for that has to be the incredibly large amount of produced timepieces over the past 60 years.  It is no surprise considering that they made nearly a million watches per year in the last decade alone, while they were making about half a million timepieces per year if not more since the 1950s.  Alone this amount of watches in the market gives them a very strong presence in the vintage market, in Addition, most Rolexes still exist after 50 or more years and tend to be in good condition.

Nevertheless, there are many smaller watchmanufactures who have much less a presence in the market, but their watches are quite wanted and sometimes quite rare..

Movado belongs to one of those in my eyes.  They tend to be underappreciated, yet have made some beautiful watches in the past.

Interestingly, I found a posting on an Internet forum showing a Super Sub Sea with completely different Hands. Quite surprising.

The history behind the Caliber H146 is quite interesting as the caliber was made by Martel.

I did not want to repeat what you can read in the above links, there is plenty of background Information regarding this watch from Movado as well as the history of this specific watch.  Take your time to read about it.

This Movado chronograph was extremely large considering that a 36mm cased timepiece was a men’s watch by that time’s Standard.  Nowadays, this is a good size, and that is exactly what this chronograph is.  It is comfortable, sporty looking.  It feel s great on your wrist and is a pleasure to wear.

The patina on the indices combined with the yellowish turned Tritium on the hands gives this watch a true vintage feel. That is what I think a vintage timepiece should be about.  It should show ist age.  It doesn’t have to hide ist scratches (or wrinkes as we would call it in a human’s face).  Looking at the dial, it is obvious that this dial has simply aged beautifully and has not been retouched.  I like old vintage watches in their original condition where the dial is untouched.

This is a watch which aged gracefully and that’s what counts.
